Call to Artists

Second Annual Juried "Women's Voices / Women's Visions" Exhibition and Prize

Musique a la Mode is issuing a call for entries of works of visual art to its second annual staging of “Women’s Voices / Women’s Visions.” The event is a concert-length program of new music integrated with a visual arts exhibition, at St. Mark’s Church in New York. It will be held on April 26th, 2009. Applicants whose works are chosen will receive a $50 honorarium and the opportunity to show their art in the “flash” one-day exhibition coinciding with the new music concert. Of the selected artists, one will be chosen by a guest juror to receive the Women’s Voices / Women’s Visions prize of $500.  Selected artists can also choose to make their work available for sale, and will receive 100% of any sales of their pieces that result from the show.

Work submitted should be relevant to this year’s theme: “Dissonance and Female Experience.” Artists are encouraged to explore a wide range of interpretations for “dissonance”—whether the struggle toward self-identity, a break from societal norms, or even something as heavy as war. Dissonance can be aural or visual, cognitive or sensorial. It can be a breathtakingly unusual color choice, or a clash of societal roles.  Can dissonance work to reframe the lives and experiences of women?

The jury members will include curator and Artforum.com critic Dawn Chan, as well as Musique à la Mode program coordinators Laurie Rubin, Jennifer Taira, and Ed Klorman. Musique a la Mode reserves the right to take installation constraints into account when selecting artworks.

To apply, send a CD of digital files that include:
-- Photo or video documentation of each work
-- A proposal which must include dimensions of work and any other financial or logistical installation constraings
-- A resume and artist’s statement
-- A check for the application fee of $25 made out to Musique à la Mode
DO NOT SEND ANY ORIGINALS

Please send applications postmarked by March 13, 2009 to:
